playlist explorations and recommendations

(this page is very much still in progress, sweater was made in august of 2021 so I have tons more playlists to explain and work through, stay tuned!)

cool old lady

old(ish) rap, things like MF DOOM and tribe called quest. I like to mix up my music taste every now and again, and I think this playlist does a pretty good job at diversifying it. nothing else to add except that this playlist always lightens my mood.

rolling hills

honestly a more updated version of my november playlist, just with some more updated music. every song on here is good background noise to a conversation or just my thoughts. not much else to say about this one that I didn’t already describe below, as you can see I value thinking music. oh also! this playlist, being more recent, was the start of my incorporation of my favorite artists. here you can find duster, the smashing pumpkins, radiohead, mac demarco, elliott smith, etc.

november

november. fall is my absolute favorite time of year, and I think this playlist perfectly represents the mood it puts me in. full of gentle guitar and some old classics, this playlist just makes me comfortable. now I associate it most with the bus rides to and from school after field hockey ended my junior year. that time in my life was specifically filled with lots of turmoil, all of which is sorted out now, but every time I would sit in the third two-seater on the bus ride home I could simply escape. I’ve found that my favorite pockets of time throughout my life have always been those when I’m in a car (or bus in this example) and listening to music. I always have the choice to either think or listen, usually doing a combination of both. I can choose to turn my brain completely off or completely on, depending on the mood I am in and what’s going on in my life at the time. this playlist was always perfect for both.

sweater

this playlist started out as songs like Undone by Weezer (yes…… I am a Weezer fan……) as eventually just became an amalgamation of music I enjoyed from august to october of 2021. I think it has just the right amount of music to remind me of fall, which was a time for me built upon change. I was a junior in high school, meredith (older sister) wasn’t living at home anymore, and overall I think I was just maturing. this playlist lasted through my sixteenth birthday and the end of summer, which I feel is sort of shown by the mix of alternative rock and indie music (think TV girl and pinkpantheress)

classical

my fascination and love for classical music really began in late 2020 as a result of listening to it fairly often when doing my homework. it soon developed from background music into something I would put on for a long car ride or when I was just sitting in my room. I absolutely adore classical now and it’s become one of my favorite genres. my favorite songs are probably: Liebestraum by Franz Liszt, Nocturne No.8 in D flat, Op.7 No.2 by Chopin, and Reverie by Debussy.

getting older

I believe I made this playlist around mid-august of 2021, the day my family and I dropped off my older sister at college. there had never been a moment in my life she wasn’t within a thirty-second walk across my hallway at home, so this event really struck me hard. all of my feelings, though, weren’t necessarily negative. I was excited for her new chapter in life, her new school, her new friends, and most importantly to watch her grow in the same ways I hope to as well once I reach her age. I made this playlists to encapsulate what I felt during the two hour car ride to and from Villanova, as I felt all sorts of bittersweetness. these songs are meant to comfort me in the fact that everyone ages and good does come with change. as of now it’s a little old, but the feelings that come through with these songs still stand.

back to my roots

although I don’t listen to it as much, I’ll never fully move past my 70s phase. this playlist mainly consists of Beatles, a band which will always have a nostalgic place in my heart, as well as some John Denver and James Tayler. I find that although I might not love every song from this era like I once did, there are some songs I will never move past and will forever love. additionally, the Beatles are a band I will never let go of (they were one of the only artists whose music I would practice in my voice lessons when I was 10-11ish, and a favorite of my parents even before then. apparently they have a distinct memory of me performing “Drive my Car” in front of a crowd of fellow 6 year olds, specifically the “beep beep, beep beep, yeah!” section. my dad loves “while my guitar gently weeps” and my mom is a huge fan of “blackbird”).
